Two key factors in their success is highly oxygenated water and you have to select a very healthy specimen from the start (fat - no sunken belly, thin flesh, etc.). They aren't fish you can expect to introduce and "build up" - you have to start with them in top condition.
BTW - if you feel you don't have room for a clown tang, you wouldn't have room for an Achilles.
