I have kept many yellow tangs over the years and always found them to be very hardy, disease resistant, and excellent algae grazers. I can't say the same about my current regal. He isnt a very good grazer so I've decided to add another tang. I'm basically thinking a kole, purple, or yellow. Can anyone tell me how koles and purples are in terms of algae grazing and ich resistance?

Regals are notorious for ich and not being good algae grazers. I love mine though, one of my favorite fish. I've always heard yellows are the best grazers but koles are good too. For a solid workhorse you can't beat a foxface though. Amazing how clean they keep the rock work.

Yes tangs are more prone but regals and powder blue/browns are in a different league. I have found yellows to be very resistant. I am wondering since purples are in the same family as yellows if they carry the same level of hardiness and grazing proficiency even though they are from different oceans.

My purple seems to graze as much as my yellow. If I had to choose between my purple, yellow and regal and could only keep one it would be the purple. But I am glad I don't have to choose. :-)

I have had all of the above and if I was to recommend a Tang it would be the Kole. The kole is different in regards to being a bristle tooth tang. Not only is he a good grazer but he will eat the poop from the other fish in the tank. My Kole is the only one that gets a hot meal. :lol2::yuk:

Yeah that just made dr pepper come out of my nose, lol. Everyone is entitled to a hot meal. My regal actually enjoys them too.

My weimareiner likes them but that doesn't help my tank. Thanks for helping me narrow down to the purple and kole. I want the utility of the yellow but I wanted to experience keeping a new fish.

Lol. My coral beauty does that too.

The yellow tang is perhaps the hardiest (and the only one that I can keep from getting ich). The kole, however will be the better grazer. I've managed to kill 3 koles from ich in QT before I gave up on them. If you fart too loud in their presence, they break out with ich, so definitely QT...
