What would cause my tank to be really cloudy after a water change? Did my venal water change earlier today, came home from dinner and the tank is really cloudy.

Edit: Uh oh. Think I've got a situation here. Yellow tang if laying on the sand bed breathing heavy. Testing parameters as I type.

Mixed water yesterday afternoon as normal. Turned on heaters, kept pumps running until today for three change. Checked salinity and temp and then did wc

Edit: About 25 gallon change 200 ish total system

Edit: Temp 78 been consistant 77.5-78. Salinity 1.025. Ph 8.2 ammonia 0. Nitrite 0. Nitrate 0. Also removed a bunch of cheato and cleaned skimmer with change.

I really hate to sit here and watch this poor guy die even though I know I can't do anything. Could I have gottin a bad batch of salt? It's a new bucket.

Salinity. Definitely not throwing them under the bus here. Probably something I did. Just changed from io. Wanted to give it a try. Haven't had a fish loss in a long time. Last time it was a yellow and it was from temp swing. I just didnt have one here, at least I think so.

Sounds like your tank is trying to crash. If it were me I would do a 30% to50% wc it may help. I could be wrong. My tanks have all crashed at the same time (bug man sprayed our house) its a pain in the butt with a system that big but it's better than loosing a fish or worse..... Your prized coral!!!

No worries!!!
It's some precip...it's fine! Just can learn to mix it better, but it really doesn't matter..great stuff!

Edit: There is a thread here to explain how to mix it better for less precip, but you can pm or email or post in their forum, again, no worries at all..it'll clear shortly.

No offense here but I think I mixed it correctly. Mixed in a 30 gallon can with rodi. 500gph mag with several maxi jets. Mixed over a period of three to four hours. I added a cup in between beers:)

Edit: Yellow still on sandbed. Regal is hiding out, which is fairly normal but he wouldn't come out and eat. Lights just went off

Edit: Should I start mixing salt?

Edit: yellow Tang is dead.

Any updates today?

Tang dying after a water change....coincidence? Major PH or temp? Disturbance with bacteria in sand?

I do know that it's common for Salinity to be cloudy from precip.

Lights were off when I left for work so did the best roll call I could. everybody looks fine including coral. I have someone monitoring the tank for me today. I monitored temp before and after the change and it was consistant. Did not do the same with ph but 8.2 is pretty spot on for me. Wish I knew what happened. That yellow was huge and beautiful, he had been in my tanks for over a year and a half.

Edit: Did not vacuum sand yesterday.

Could your water mixing container have been contaminated? Or could something else have contaminated the tank during the water change (hand lotion... air freshener).

That sort of thing happened to a customer of mine once when his brother had used his "fish bucket" to wash his car. Soap kills.

I find it highly unlikely that a change in salt brands was the cause - but clearly something went horribly wrong :(

Thats the only thing I can think of jenn. I store my barrels in the garage. They both have lids and I keep then on but it's possible something could have gottin in. I'll be cleaning the mixing barrel tonight. Just hope that whatever it was doesn't crash the whole tank.

Good luck. I'm on my second bucket of Salinity and dump my salt all at once and let my maxijet stir it up. My maxijet is loose in the barrel and I swing it around a couple of times throughout the mixing cycle to pick up what settles on the bottom after dumping. I have had some slight precip on a couple occasions but nothing that ever concerned me or caused any problems. It has always cleared within 30 minutes or so.

I think this is too fast. Everything I have read says to mix this salt slow with a lot of flow.

Complaints I have heard were related to the white powder stains on the mixing equipment. That doesn't both me. There have been threads on this forum before on this topic that seachem has responded to. They have stated that there is no negative side effect to the livestock. To avoid the residue they recommended mixing the salt slowly. If there are other concerns I would be interested in hearing them. I am not recommending mixing the salt quickly only stating that I have not had any problems so far doing so.

I do 15 gallon water changes and add 7 cups of salt all at once.

Dude I hope you figure it out. That sounds terrible. So, is it safe to say its not salinity. My water changes use to be murky. Everything would just out int

Edit: Into slime. I just mixed the water for a period of days instead of 24 hours like the bucket recommends. Make sure the water you add is warm near ur water temp as well. Dont want temp swings.
