Just curious does the GA aquarium do water changes? If so how often and how much water is changed?

Funny u asked. We just got a behind the scenes tour of the aquarium in the filtration and lighting and all the inner workings. They said they go through 200 tons of salt a month. So I guess we would have to find out how many gallons of water that makes. But they also have the evaporation factor and each exhibit is it's on filtration. Like the 6.3 million gallon shark tank is a different system than the reef wall tank and so on.

They also have water changes in the fresh water fish and the cold water exzibits.

My girl and I are tying to get on the volunteer dive cleaning crew there. If I do I will get more info. I have some pics of the filtration from our tour last week also

When Kimberly Hall spoke, she said that the evap rate was about 500g/day in the summer.

She also told how much volume they changed, but I forgot how much it was. She did say that they had to coordinate with the Atlanta sewer system each time due to the volume of water they would be releasing, so it's a big number.

I can't imagine that there is such a level, unless we're talking about the actual ocean. :)

Good timing of this question, watch for the May meeting announcement....

By the way, 1 ton = ~7,000gallons, but it's not 200 tons/month

This might give you some more info.

It's a 6.3 million gallon tank thats 9000 tons just to set the water right. So 20 % of that is 1,260,000 gallons and that comes out to 180 tons at your 7000 gallons a ton of salt. I would imagine that they do 20% changes with the amount of fish they have.

But just my two cents so ya... I do say 200 tons of salt a water change

Edit:

We just started talking to a dive master the and signed up for the volunteer dive teem to help clean all the tanks. So no we didn't know anyone there but we meet some great people. U have to. Have 25 logged dives to even get on the sign up list to volunteer dive. The guy was just real nice and was generous enough to show us, because I was asking so many questions

Georgia Aquarium typically doesn't perform 20% water changes, especially not on Ocean Voyager. Come to the May meeting and I'll tell you exactly how much saltwater is consumed and how much gets treated and re-used.
