What is the worst thing that has happened to you in the hobby?

I've had some issues that have seemed worse at the time. Most all of my fish losses have been in QT or jumpers before netting the top of the tanks. I can't say I've have any thing as bad as many here have posts but the worst for me has been Vermetid snails and/or Gelidium, better known as RTA.

I don't know if I want to laugh or cry at @drnecropolis story. How was the "Associate" able to even walk out of the house let alone drive after downing a 5th of vodka?
I don't know, if I just trashed a house, on top of destroying a presumably $10-$15k aquarium I probably would've sobered up enough to get the out of there without to much issue.

I've had the usual garbage of different algae outbreaks and minor overflows, typical reefer stuff.

I had a pretty close call a couple months ago. Broke out the old halides to get this party rolling again and everything was fine. One day when I was home the lights kicked on, but only one came on. Thought that was kind of odd, unplugged the ballast for the "off" light and plugged it back in trying to see what was up. Well when it came on I heard bacon frying, typically that gets me pretty excited, but seeing as how there was no one else home I was a bit worried and quickly unplugged it. Well the 10+ year old wiring harness in the $90 chinese pendant had finally given up on life and there was a hard ground in the pendant. It was effectively trying to weld itself together. Probably had a lot to do with the old lumatek ballast kicking the bucket. I've since replaced the wiring in there but if I wasn't home it could've been pretty bad. I have everything hooked to a GFCI but it didn't kick it off for some reason.

Yeah, talk about a shocker.. most the rock and coral and everything were already out and in stock tanks and all, so the loss (in that moment) was really low. Shortly a lot died off.

Dude was a raging alcoholic and it was probably an hour or two of drinking, but still..

That was my dream tank, everything was pretty much automated and on a controllers for everything. Now that's not uncommon, but we are talking years ago.

It broke my passion for the hobby, just completely "this sucks, I'm not doing it anymore, look at all this wasted time, effort and money, all the death for nothing"

I'm excited to get this tank Im working on now going, it's taking a little time, but I'm kinda meticulous about stuff so, every little detail is being looked at.

Anyway, back in topic..

Any time you get frags, think about me coming home to a destroyed tank and room, it all started from not dipping a free frag.

well I had a doosey.... 18 years ago I successfully moved a 120 gallon from rochester NY to Boca Raton FL. transported a breeding pair of bluespotted jawfish. red eye banicle blenny, blastomusas , oregon blue tort [air of draconus gobies and a whole bunch of nice sps lps and zoas. successfule 2 day drive and transplant them into a 90 corner. wife and I were sharing a house with my best friend and his wife. fast forward 3 months. wife son comes for a visit with his girlfriend. wife and them leave to go shopping tank is looking great. friends wife and nephew are still home. wife comes back an hour later and the tank is white and the house smells funny. check the tank smells like chlorine. test water with chlorine test is enough to clean a pool. aks friends wife what happened and says maybe the kid did something.... find out later she's manic depressive and bipolar and happily not taking meds. was upset because attention was off of her with visit. tank is total loss. immediately start looking for our own home found one a few months later. moved out and no longer friends or havent talked in 18 yrs. was best friend for 20 years before this.

Funny thing about Boca... there's a lot of places to put bodies.

I used to have a 150 fowlr & a 125 reef, things were great. One day my wife calls me, while I’m on a business trip of course, & says 3 fish had died in the reef. It was the beginning of a system crash which resulted in the loss of all of my fish & 20 + coral colonies. I took down both systems & sold everything.

That was even worse than the respiratory infection I got after cutting a few hundred frags for an ARC frag meeting.

Jeez, that sucks. I'm glad I don't travel like I used too. Changing jobs was a big part of getting back into this hobby.

Dinos. Never wanted to take a sledge hammer to everything quite like I do right now.
