WHY would I have gotten SHOCKED?

OK... I unplugged my kalk stirrer from Avast Marine. WHILE it is unplugged I touched the metal part of the plug from the stirrer to get it out of my stand and ZAP. Honestly It was a pretty good pop. I thought maybe static...

cleaned kalk stirrer.. put back under stand.. while routing the plug again ZAP... stronger hit this time.. but a SHOCK.. not static.... LOOKED ALL AROUND there is NOTHING else I'm touching... Nothing is even close.. Why would an UNPLUGGED MOTOR shock me?

going to test it with meter.

ok im not an electrician, but here is what my meter is on.. and what I read.

TOUCHING ONLY THE metal part of the UNPLUGGED kalk stirrer.

Meter : AC Auto. at V

Reading was consistantly .018v

make any sense to anyone?

i wonder if a capacitor in the housing is doing it.

Sounds like there is a capacitor in the motor as you said. I would email AVAST. If there is an issue they will take are of it. Good customer service.

i agree.. sounds like its a capacitor......still .. would it offer current backwards?

i guess so.. less there was something stopping it.

i actually emailed them already, but not about this.

the motor on the stirrer stalled recently. It took a good bump to get it going....

I wonder if the 2 are related.

Yep...sounds like a capacitor in there. It will definately leak backwards but normally it would be protected from doing so by a resistor or something. We used to charge them in Electrical Engineering and toss them to the freshmen...not nice I know. The easiest thing to do is to cross to ground which would discharge the capacitor.

My guess would be a startup capacitor on the motor, but they're generally used for much larger motors, and are also generally protected by some kind of shunt to prevent you getting nipped. I would definitely call the MFR to see what the deal was.

And yes, getting bit by unplugged electronics sucks. That was a lesson that an old tube TV provided me about 25 years ago. Them puppies can BITE.

Definitely sounds like the capacitor discharged. Note to self don't go digging around behind your "old" CRT TV's either
