12G Nano Question

Hey there Guys, well I wasn't able to make it out to AquaBuys last night cause I had to stay a work longer than expected. Next available dayoff is Tuesday so I will definately be getting the DX then.

By the way last night while looking through the left over liverock I had in a Coleman cooler with some powerheads running, I discover a very small piece of rock that had three or Four Almost pod like features barely hanging on to it. I removed this rock and gave it a nice salt water bath, and placed it into my nano, I know if it really is anything it probably won't make it but figured hell if it's lived this long in the nasty tank over at my friends house, maybe there's a chance. A few minutes later it fell off the small rock it was on, so I placed it in a Crevice of a larger raock in my tank. I took some pictures but they are not to good, I'll post them up here as soon as I load em.

This morning when I turned the light on in the Nano the pods instantly started to open open and something was coming from the inside toward the light. About 5 Seconds later the **** light in my Nano Popped! Now I have to buy another compact to last me until Tuesday when I can get the DX...ARGH!

hey do not buy another pc wait unless you have corals it realy is just helping a algea bloom although i am prety sure that it could surive untill tuesday.

OK Guys I finally got my New 12G DX Yesterday. Since setting up the Nano I got from my friend and reading tons of threads on here and other websites, I had this Idea for my new Nano. Does anyone know of anything made that distrubutes the water from the return to more areas of the tank than just the top where the spray Nozzle is? I have seen a Piece on Ebay that Y's that off but still not exactly what I'm looking for. I'm currently drawing up something like what I'm talking about. But wanted some more Ideas.

OK Maybe I was being stupid because Now that I have looked around some more, it sounds as if a Hydor Flow may be the Answer. Is or has anyone used this and if so what did you think?

if you have a mj 1200 installed on that tank, IMO that should be fine as far as dispersing flow. I am not sure if you could install hydor flow on the return outlet?

I've seen pics of people with these on their nano returns:

My worry is that water would splash up onto the light when the flow pointed up.

I use one in 2 of my tanks..excellent randumness and disperse flow. The only draw back is making sure it stays clean. Easy removal and disassembly. Plus your emeralds can ride it when they get bored!

chrisjet- I do have a MJ 1200 Installed, and the flow rate is great on this thing, but I'm just a little concerned with how the water basically comes out on one side and exits right on the other. I've seen a few other people that had hydor flo's on their Nano Cubes, but haven't talked to them about if they do the job, so I should be able to make it work.

wbholwell- the hydor flo is exactly what I was thinking of using, but you are correct, The Hydor Flo was created for use on a Power head that is fully submersed in the water, I wonder what will happen when the Nozzle points straight up since a nanos return is above the water level?

flyingarmy- When you say 2 of your tanks you mean on a powerhead fully submersed right? Please see above.

On my 39 Cube the Hydor is 1/2 down the tank so no real surface agitation. but on my 29 Cube it is just right below the surface about 3" on a MJ1200 and it only moves the surface about 1/2" up and no splashing occurs. Hope that helps!

flyingarmy- Thanks for the info, I guess for the $9.96 at the good Dr's it's at least worth a try huh?

yeah give it a try, if it works let me know i might get one for my 24g. Also that pic of the crab on the hydor is great.

Lukestimp..you can see the Hydor on a sweep power head....talking about great flow and randumness!

Anyone know where I can get one around here. The Good Dr. was a good price at $9.96 but I'm not gonna pay $10 more for 7 day shipping thats ridiculous. I'd rather pay $20 and have it same day..

Cap Bay and Fish & More sells them!

flyingarmy , that video is hilarious! I think i should get one just to hope that my emerald crab does that. You should start a thread with that video so others can see it.

Well Guyus I started Setting Up the New Nano Last night, well actually I just started breaking down the other one. I drained the Majority of the water into a 10 G Quarantine tank I had laying around, and placed all the Liverock in it.

Do I need new sand for the new one or since it's so new do you think it would be OK to reuse?

I know my Cycle starts all over now, but then again, I'm thinking the first one never really got started.

As far as Cycling, do I need to have the Lights on during the day or should I leave them off throughout the cycle? Some have said that leaving them on will just start the Algae Bloom quicker, but isn't this part of the Cycle.

Also what things do I need to be testing for, I bought a Saltwater test kit but not sure if it has everything i need. Chrisjet you had said just use the strips, What strips do I need to buy, because i think that will be the easiest way to test.

Since you are starting over..just rinse the sand really well and it should be no problem. I would definitely get some LS from someone else to jump start your system. Let me know if you need any I have plenty to spare since my 55 is coming down this weekend. I would set your lights on a timer, no more than 8-10 hours a day. I would at least get the PH strips and Nitrite/Nitrate strips (all-in-one). If you need some to start you off I have a few you can borrow till you get yours. There might be a few others but those 2 will at least let you know if there are any problems starting. Hope that helps!

Flyingarmy - thanks for the reply, the old tank has only been set up for about a week and a half. I used CaribSea Live sand when I set it up, should I still rinse the sand? Also I have just now noticed your occupation is an Army Aviator, is that true? I was in the Army for 7 Years just got out about a year and a half ago. Just before leaving I took my flight Aptitude test and Flight physical to try and go to Warrant officer school. Not enough slots open before it came time to ETS so I just got out instead. I was with the 1st Ranger Battalion @ Hunter Army Airfield.

If you used new LS then you'll be fine. Yep..tis true...chinook pilot by trade...16 years thus far. 1st bat huh...used to know a few! Crazy bunch! Good luck with the tank, let me know if you need any help!
