Ok guys.. New to the hobby.. Starting a 240g build.. I'll post some pictures here if you guys want to see how it's going.. I'm new here as well... Any help or comments (positive or negative) is welcome.. Here goes..
240g STfront 240 long from glass cages..
Custom stand currently in progress (8yr exp custom cabinet builder and installation {half and half} cabinet shops in georgia.. )
Bit on my drill broke tonight so I had to quit..
Guess you could call this day one although it took glasscages 3 weeks to get the thing ready for pick up.. Inspected it, no cracks or damage, seems are actually rather clean, just a gob here and there of some caulking..
rest to be determined..

That the tank I want to get from Glasscages.com. Please post updated pix as they come because I am eager to see the progress you make. What is the charge for a custom stand and canopy for that tank?

Welcome to ARC and looking forward to watching you put together the tank. Any idea what you are going to keep yet?

Welcome! Looks like it is going to be nice. Is that upright tank in the second picture the tank you are planning on using for a sump?

I've been thinking about what i'm going to put in there, somewhat.. I have little children, so obviously a nemo and a dora (percula and tang), a trigger, I really like wrasses ( or is it wrassi, lol), I like puffers, but I hear you can't keep them with snails and shrimp.. The rest is up in the air is suppose..

As for the sump, yes, that's an acrilyc sump you see in the back ground over there.. I plan on drilling the end of it for the pipeline to the intake of my hammerhead pump..

Well the stand I'm building, I'm estimating $600 or more for the stand and canopy, just what I bought to get started was about 500 bucks... My wife wants it trimmed out nice so its adding to the price significantly.

Welcome to the ARC!!!

Looks like this will be good. Im gonna tag along as well

Ok, got the stand framing done.. One thing that was a gotya after I was done, was I put the top braces on each end right in the middle of the plumbing of the overflows.. I had to move them towards the center a few inches...I know, a little messy with the glue, but I will clean it up later on so I get a good bond with the outer layer.. Here is a picture of the stand so far..

Nice... what do you plan or trimming the stand and Canopy in (Oak, Cherry, Maple)? What lighting are you planning on? Do you have a list of equipment you are planning on? I'm kind of an equipment junkie, so I was just curious...

Thanks for sharing and welcome to ARC

Welcome to ARC. That's a well built stand. Looks as if you've done work like this once or twice. (8yr exp custom cabinet builder and installation {half and half} cabinet shops in georgia.. )

I am going to layer the outside with oak, and probably do some fluted trim with rosettes and plynth blocks.. The canopy, I have a two layer crown and crown apron planned.. Still kind of undecided how I want to do the doors, I don't have a shaper machine to make the cuts for the rails of a raised pannel door, so I'll either call up an ole buddie to see if I can get a deal, or try to make some kind of raised pannel look alike door.. Dunno...

As for equipment, You saw the sump, obvisouly.. I bought 3 300w heaters (hope that will be enough, maby some of you guys can give me some insite on heating tanks during a georgia winter). I bought regular oceanic salt. A 35w UV sterilizer. A turboflotor 1000 that I picked up off some guy in suwanne who was trying to use it for freshwater?!?, I think he was trying to pawn it off on me thinking it didn't work, but it makes nice bubbles in saltwater... I have a gently used hammerhead reeflo pump.. programable thermostat with alarms for Hi and Low temps.. 5 stage RO setup.. Test kits, etc.. So far that's it.. I have been in touch with the HORSEZIGGY who has some sand I can have and will be buying my live rock from him.. I'll need to track down some cheato when I'm ready..

I need to find someplace local that sells schedule 80 bulkheads.. Don't know if any of you guys know anyplace in the local lawrencville/buford area that has some..

As far as lighting, I'm still researching what exactly I want.. I'm open to some advice if you can give it to me.. I am thinking about keeping anonemoies, some corals, and I know MH lights are expensive, but what wattage/how many spread out over 8 ft tank do you guys think I may need..

I live not too far from you (McGinnis and 141). I have the same tank from glasscages , 240 except the tall version. Anyways, those black overflow covers kind of sux. If I was you I would route them a little larger and drill small holes at the bottom of each slits. If you don't, eventually the slits will clog up with algea since they are too slim and few to begin with.

Thanks for the advise.. I was kinda suspicious of them, I was planning on drilling holes in them..

The rail cuts can all be made on a table saw or on a router table. Panels can be raised on a TS as well, but you're obviously limited to a straight profile.
