Chapter 1: IM Nuvo40

As with everything else in this hobby patience is the key. He will likely get comfortable enough over several months or so to spend some time out, at feeding time first, and given enough time may not even be scared into hiding by your presence.

All the corals look great so far. The Duncan is open with 1.5 heads. The favia thing has 2 polyps. The gsp....will be isolated.DC0F21B4-18EB-45E5-A5CA-E7EEB38BFF71.jpegDC0F21B4-18EB-45E5-A5CA-E7EEB38BFF71.jpeg

I need to get the sand sifter and then I’ll be in observation mode. It almost feels like a real Reef tank now that it has some movement

Nice! Just know that your coral beauty isn’t always reef safe. They can nip at corals occasionally, and that will likely kill corals (frags) that aren’t large mature colonies.

On the other hand, it’s possible that it won’t hurt your corals too. You definitely want to keep it well fed with a variety diet though to prevent this, which may require a little more tank maintenance than usual and a little more expenses.

Beautiful fish though!

and that GSP and the Duncan are insane growers!

They do better when you have more than one in same tank.
Agree. I’ve had 2 of the red firefish before at separate times which just hid and eventually wasted away, 1 purple that eventually came out but very skiddish and only ate when nothing else was close by then darted back. This time I went with 1 red and 1 purple together and they’re out all the time. Might just be the luck of the draw though lol

I'll likely have to try it.
I've seen my purple's head twice and thats about it. It seems like a waste to have such beautiful colors and live under a rock.

Agree on the coral beauty. It seems to be hit or miss with this variety. And I bought the smallest one they had.
I tied a small piece of nori on a rock and put it in the tank, but the angel is largely ignoring it. He's investigated it twice but hasn't taken any nips.

I would recommend Larry’s Food, such as LRS Fish Frenzy; it’ll be one of the cleanest and healthiest variety packs. Hopefully it will satisfy their nutritional needs so they don’t feel the desire to pick on corals. It’s pricier than most other frozen food; but it honestly is a very good bang for your buck!

Shut off the pumps and squirt a tiny bit of reef roids onto the corals.
What is that coming out of the favia? Poop or tentacles?4C62C52C-F955-4116-B8C9-8D228A1C2490.jpeg7989DED6-42F0-4470-86C8-A79031944D34.jpegF825F2AE-6C64-4A4F-B3B3-62A353AF25FA.jpeg

Once I shut off the pumps, the purple firefish came out. Which was amazing at first and then the stupid @&$#*% jumped out of the tank, bounced off the window curtain and landed in the back sump.
I had to pulled everything out the the back, run to Walmart to get a tiny net and net the bastard.
Holy smokes man...I don’t think he is going to get a partner. I can’t deal with two dummies with suicidal tendencies.

I’m not sure if it was this thread, but I (and others) recently addressed the suicidal fish question on here. Generally speaking, fish that are torpedo shaped our predisposition to be jumpers. This includes all dartfish, like your firefish. If you have one of these fish, then you need something to prevent them from jumping. This can mean a lid, a canopy, or other solution.

I'm starting to see a brown dusting on my reef rock and a bit on the sand.
Diatom algae?

The stuff coming out of the favia is really "what's going in to the favia", favia uses a mucus layer to pull in this particles that land on it. You can setup a time lapse video when you feed, the process happens to show to see in real time, but it looks cool once it's sped up.

I have a quick question - I started this reef tank with dry rock. I have 4 small fish and 3 small frags of coral. Everything seems to be doing well.

Is there any point to add one piece of live rock to the tank at this point?
