I hooked up my first VorTech MP10wES just now and was stunned at how loud it was. I have Koralia 240gph and Marineland 500gph circulation pumps, and they're completely silent. The difference was shocking. I expected a high-end pump like this to be at least as good as the cheapo ones.

Is something wrong with this pump or the way I'm hooking it up? Or are they always this loud?

Mine is whisper quiet. What kind of sound is it? If it is a clicking/clacking it may be aligned incorrectly.

Do you have the spacer correct? Or does your tank require the spacer?

Make sure the wet/dry side is lined up properly as well.

Trust me, you have the best powerhead on the market.

The propeller has a very loud hum. When I separate the two pieces, it's virtually silent except for the soft hum of the dry-side piece. When I connect the pieces, though, the wet-side piece has a VERY substantial hum.

I am not using the separator, as my tank thickness is more than 3/8". I can tell when I don't have the pieces lined up right, because I hear the difference in the sound.

Maybe it's because I don't have the tank anywhere near full yet, and more water would eliminate the noise?

My vortechs like to let me know that they are working. They are LOUD. Always have been.

I have mine set up around 10 feet from my chair and I do not hear it over anything else in the house. When I am peering into my tank the the hum is noticeable.

I have mine on reef crest mode set to 80%, so it is not always ramped to full speed. Short pulse mode is a lot louder to my ear than reef crest/lagoon.

i have two and one is very quiet and the other is slightly loud but since my tank is only a 20 long i keep them turned down most of the time so its not really noticable but when i run nutrient transport before i do a waterchange you can definately tell its there. i sent it in to ecotech to see if they could fix it or replace the wetside and when they sent it back to me it was a little quiter but unfortunately the problem was not fixed i may just get a replacement wetside you should probably send it to them and talk to them about getting it fixed maybe youll have better luck

Sounds like they're just going to be a little loud. That's a bummer. I've worked so hard to get quiet pieces for everything else, and this was one area that I never even considered.

Did you follow the "aligning" instructions that Vortech says to do when you set it up?

I tried to setup a 900 Marineland in Circulation mode and it was so loud I changed it back to powerhead mode.

I have heard multiple times that the mp10s are loud due to high rpm motors from my understanding mp40s are more quiet. I cant confirm this as I don't own one and never payed any attention to sound of mp40 but mine is loud and always has been but I don't notice it anymore keep mine in lagoon mode at about 80 peak power

If you are specifically listening for the pump or you have a super quiet system with no ambient noise around the tank you will be able to hear them. however by no means is it normal if above a soft hum.

When aligning make sure the pump is off. In my expirence aligning while on can cause wet side failure.

I have both a 10 and 2 40s and the 10 is louder than the 40s. Saying that it still isn't so loud that it is noticebale unless I am listening for it. Give it some time and see if it just needs to break in a little.

+1 to Dawgface, never seperate them when the pump is on.it can cause the little clip on the inside of wet side to break,i did it and it broke and it was very loud until i repaired it.

Very loud like something was broken? Or just like a very loud hum? I've definitely separated the pieces with it running :(

I agree that the MP10 is louder than the 40. I just recently replaced the bearings in my mp10 and it got a little quieter but not as quiet as the 40.

very loud and clanking noise, not just the regular hum.i have 2 40s and one 10 and they all have a slight hum.when i broke the 10,it was obvious that something was wrong.

I can hear my MP10 but like most others it's just a hum and more noticeable when it's in a pulse mode. My fans on the biocube are generally louder and I upgraded those to quieter ones.

Side note, I took a waterproof camcorder and took some video from inside the tank. Now that's freaking loud.

I'd love to see that footage!

I think I have seen someone post this online before. Sounds like a helicopter in the water.
