Starting vodka dosing...

Ok a little update since I started dosing vodka. For all the people who didnt wantto read the thread I will up date you all. I wanted to try and get my nitrates down to zero so I started dosing vodka. My nitrates where at 20 just 6 days ago.

I started by doing .4 every night for the first 4 days now I just started to double the amount for the last two days. and so on it goes. Im carefully logging the results after each week with dose amounts and nitrate levels. I have heard that it takes a few weeks to see the results.

Since I started dosing all my livestock is doing the same no heavy breathing and there active and eating well.

All soft corals are doing ok, and there is no change with PE. SPS also seems to be doing ok PE is normal besides a couple burnt tips on two of them. There doesnt seem to be as much algae on the glass like normal either.

The skimmer.... Is pulling out this pasty black nasty skimmate that has the consistantcy of oil, but the thickness of mud if that makes any sense lol. My nitrates are still at 20 with my normal feedings.

I feed once a day frozen and seeweed at night on a clip to my tangs. I buy the ones in the sushi section of wally world for $2.39 thats about 1/3 the cost of the LFS and triple the amount.

I will get some pictures of the skimmer in the morning.

it's important that your true alk be about 9 or lower to avoid burnt tips on sps.

I still remember you telling me that as of right now its 9.8 and I tuned my calcium reactor down a bit. We will see if that helps.

Being that both are distilled, I don't think (surely can't see how) it matters at all. What you DON'T want to use is anything that is flavored or colored in any way. Just plain old vodka. A lot of starchy plant materials can be fermented and then distilled to produce alcohol (technically it's ethanol). JMHO

So if we have fish from the Caribbean should we dose Tequila? What about Saki for fish off Japanese waters?

Dosing tequila would only make your fish wake up with a gnarly hang over and spotty memory!
