Useful items and where to get them

I can't find anything against krylon in the tank other than the usual reseverations of putting a fairly pre-dried toxic substance in a tank. I have no idea of Krylons chemical composition after it dries nor its perpensity to dissolve in saltwater. I do know you are correct that some people run it in their tank with reported success. Assuming it bonds well to a magnet, it should prevent leeching/rusting of the magnet metals.

I am not sold on paint in a tank though. Acetone, Propane, Toulene and a host of other chemicals are found inside Krylon. I go by the simple rule of thumb that I don't put anything in my tank unless I have a really good idea of what it is and how it is going to react or I personally would actually drink out of a container loaded with it.

Let's try to keep this thread on topic... "useful items and where to get them"
We can take a discussion to a seperate thread if needed.
Thanks! :)

For those who prefer their bottoms bare...

Much cheaper than a huge sheet of Starboard, and available in black.

If you want to make your own two part additive I found Prestone Driveway Heat at the Publix on Towne Lake Pkwy. in the spring and a huge (15 lb. I think) bag of baking soda at BJ's in Woodstock. You can also use the baking soda in your pool to raise the alk. I think it was $3 for the bag.

Power cord extensions. These are suprising handy and beat using a surge protector for one or two power connections.

There are other 'fish tank' hose holders out there, but check this out instead. It is stainless steel, strong, and coated in silicone so hoses grip. Attach it to a 5gal bucket and the hose wont jump out when the suction is released.

A standard 5/8" siphon hose slides in perfectly from the side. You can feed upto a 3/4"od hose also. $7 at cooking stores. (Sur La Table, Crate&Barrel, Container Store).

Don't buy an extra one to hold you spoons, it stinks at that. Gimmicky uni-tasker in the kitchen. Alton would hate it, as do I.

You can find a number of handy little "dosers" in the pharmacy section at Kroger. They have little bottles with measurements on them, and similar items to the one posted from Walgreen. Also, some of the stores catering to teachers (I forget the name, there is one in the Petsmart Shopping Center at Northlake) have some helpful items, like small beakers and flasks. I also used to have some very small plastic brushes (I think from a bird supply store), that were perfect for cleaning small openings and hoses. I lost mine (a danger because they are only the size of a toothpick) and haven't been back to the bird store. I really miss those brushes (if anyone has seen them lately).

Also, I use a lot of bamboo barbecue skewers. Sometimes to move things a little, and to clean out anything hose or opening too long for my little brushes.

+1 on the skewers. Ayt walmall, $ for 100 and they work great for scooting things around. I also use mine to feed anemones. I just spear the grub and let the nem pull it from the skewer. You can zip tie them together too for extra reach.

very cool new product! check it out!
this would have limited use for my 55 (but I'm still going to get 1), but for those of you that have those big bad tanks, this would really add to your aqua-scape!

American Marine Pinpoint Salinity Calibration Fluid

This is one of the best possible ways to calibrate your refractometer. Most refractometers have you calibrate with distilled water but this only lets you know that your refractometer is accurate at 0ppt/1.000 specific gravity. With this product you can now know with certainty that you saltwater ppt/specific gravity is correct
