Vortech MP40 ES Tips?

No, thats not correct. You can run them in either ES mode, or the original reef crest, lagoon, short pulse, or long pulse.

THAT being said... I keep mine on the Yellow mode.. .what ever thats called haha.

One on each side.. about 8-10 inches down. If it sucks an air tornado into the tank then move it down a lil more.

the wave modes are fun to play with, but I didnt really like it long term (not talking about NTM just standing wave) and unless it is in wall you'll get a pretty loud buzz buzz buzz from a standing wave mode.

I REALLLLLY wish they had some sort of TIMED mode.. so you could run reef crest mode say 5 hours and for the remaining 4 hours lights are on run NTM!

There is a NIGHT mode I make use of. Which is pretty cool. But still want to be able to program changes during the day.

B

No, you dont NEED 3, but it works best with three.

Why do you want to change modes during the day? I dont understand.

In terms of modes- well, kinda. They added the autotune for the wavefunction, and the driver itslef has a lot more functions. Now you can edit the night duration, the battery speed, the feed duration and speed, autodim the leds, and the driver acts as a battery power gauge when running off battery. In addition to having greater wireless range.

I run the NTM, but with no set wave frequency. SO, over the course of the "wave" period, it varies, starting at a quick pulse and garduially slowing significantly, until the "flush". This way, there is a brief period where you have the true wave, but before and after its builds and wanes. Very cool.

I have the WXM unit for the Apex so I run night time mode from midnight to 8, then reefcrest for a few hours, then pulse for an hour, then tidal swell for two hours, then pulse for an hour, reefcrest for four and NTM for another four... well.. .something like that.

Just for random flow.

I understand how </em>you do it, but dont understand why. Everything but reefcrest and lagoon are design to be routine and repetitive. Changing them out defeats the purposes, kind of.

What is it you are looking for with the "random flow" you are aiming for?

Pretty much to change things up a bit.

That and some of the modes I consider to be useful, but loud (Read NTM).

I think that there is value in the randomness of it... I would agree that NTM could be more effective if left to run.

But.....I still dont understand. if you just want random, leave it in Reef crest, which randomly varies the power in bursts. Switching to NTM, pulse, etc, doesnt make it any more random.

By the way, I have 6 MP40ws running, and they are dead silent. If yours are loud, reconsider their setup- there is a reason.

I've heard plenty of MP40s I realize that its not that loud, but its louder... at least more noticeable when its running its varying pulses for NTM as you can hear it power up. No louder than my Dad's 4 MP40s.

Reef Crest does do random, but adding in the other modes cant hurt anything. My tank seems to be very happy since I've started running the programs (real or perceived... eh)

We can agree to disagree on the merits of it... I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on flow (thats not meant to sound like I'm callin you out).

You are right. If you like and want it, so be it. That's all that matters. I just don't understand how it benefits. In fact, now that I think about it, in my mind it makes it LESS random. But, to each their own.

What I don't think you get in NTM when you don't have any back mounted pumps is the push of detritus to the front, which then gets caught up in the L/R motion of the side pumps. I'm sure there is some back/forth movement with just L/R side pumps, but it is probably a more complete flush of stuff with a back pump and the accompanying undertow it would create in the back and behind the rock.

Agreed. All 3 planes of pumps would be most ideal, but are not necessary, IMO.

So tonight I set them up, just finished.

Ok, so I have the Master Purple & The Slave orange. ES mode....TSM, I believe.

Both are across from each other on the opposing sides.

good for SPS? (I realize I'll play with it and figure it out, but in the meantime........lol)

You'll love them Ralph. One thing I wish the new controllers had was a couple of tabs on the top for screwing them into wood.

For TSM, the purple will have the first two leds illuminated. I assume you wen tthrough the steps to assign the master and slave too, right? I like TSM better than reef crest and ran it for a while when I first got the ES.

Bad communication on me

Yes I set up master slave
Yes the first 2 are lit up on master only
