I believe it's important to introduce the human population to such creatures, but I realize there are polarizing views....

"Act Now to Change the Fate of Belugas
With fewer than 35 belugas in accredited aquariums in North America, this population of animals in human care is facing certain extinction. That’s because there is simply not enough genetic diversity to promote healthy breeding, meaning that within a few decades, according to experts, the public will lose touch with these magnificent mammals. Don’t let this happen. In spite of great success in breeding belugas (18 of these animals were born in modern-day aquariums), there’s still much scientists don’t know about beluga whales – and still so much they need to learn. Sign the Caring Together for Belugas petition today to support Georgia Aquarium’s request for a permit to import 18 belugas from a robust population of whales in Russia to help support the zoological community’s efforts to protect and conserve the species. This program is critical to educate people about the need to protect belugas in the wild; conduct non-invasive study and observation to help conserve the species; and help sustain a healthy population of beluga whales in human care."

large mammals don't belong in captivity..... especially not to blow water in your face... and we don't sell rays or sharks or sea horses for that matter

haha, so only you choose what we the public can have even though you retail saltwater creatures? Oh OK, yup, just like Mayor Bloomberg on my size of soda...I'm thinking you live in the wrong state, buddy! :D

I thought this is under reef discussion..... I'm just saying I think its disgusting. I also don't like seeing large mammals in zoos... to me it's just not right

I love 'em! :)

and that's why they're in captivity... I don't hate ya, each their own... I just have this thing with large mammals in captivity.

my vote is in. Great pics btw!

Why draw the line at large mammals? A lot of these animals will live a better life in captivity then they would ever have had in the wild!

what makes you think that? what's the body count again at the Georgia Aquarium?

Just to be clear, is this research supposed to keep these whales from becoming extinct in the wild or just in human care?

Research why these animals should not be taken from their pods in nature.... specially the mothers and and offspring...... make your own decision

Interest to know as well. If truly a species needs human intervention and quarantine captivity to save it from extinction then I'm on board. If it's just to have, for us, then I think the ones we have are enough.

Where's the link to vote against taking the beluga whales from their original home [the ocean]? Let them [the beluga whales] stay in their natural environment.

Wannabee

I believe they've already been denied and this is some sort of appeal.....

I don't like seeing them in captivity either. But at the same time, it's the only way some of us even know they exist. I voted.

I'm just asking that everybody please do a little reading before you vote on this matter, beluga whales are highly social and intelligent creatures and to rip them away from their families and sentence them to isolation and mental derangement so we have something to do on Saturday.....................
