I have a reeflo dart return pump (3000gph) with 3 mp40s on my 180gallon. Starting to wonder if its overkill. I have to dial them WAY down to prevent a sandstorm, and I don't even have fine sand.

I know for a SPS dominant tank 3 or more would be fine, but beginning to think eliminating the one on the back wall would make sense.

Any opinions?

I had two 40's in my 90 gallon and loved it. I, for one, don't feel as if it's too much but that's just me. What kind of sand is it?

I have the same tank as you and the same sand too Ryan. I have 2 MP40 and 2 K4. I rarely have my MP40's ramped up, when I do it blows my fish right out of the water column and they hide all the time. It also creates dunes in my sandbed.....so to me, a lil overkill.

Hmm. I've got four on my tank and no real issues... Of course the two along the back wall are dialed waaaaay down.

I think alot of it has to do with aquascaping, I have minimal rock

I have 2 mp40s in my 175. Sometimes I wish I had either a third MP40 or maybe an MP10 to fill in a little. I think your good with 3. Just dial them in.

run all three... decrease their maximum flow until you've got flow where you want it..

you can run an MP40 in a 30gal cube if you want..
