Chapter 2: 50g Lowboy LPS

dripping kalk into the system at very low dosage - 1/2 teaspoon per gallon.
its probably 1 drop per 7 seconds, which isn't enough to keep up with evaporation so my arm still doubles as an ato.

keeping an eye on ph which has been around 8 - 8.1

first milli sps “nuclear sunset”

fingers crossed

Tank looks to be doing good. I’m playing with the lights a bit - I’m running noops and use the lps/spa setting but turned the whites down to peak at 5%.

I’ve also picked up some mid range sticks...and took some photos using iPhone & orphek Stacked yellow and orange lense. No editing straight out of the phone. The acros look better in the photos than they do in real life lol. I’m not sure why the favia picture is so blue, maybe the phone was at an angle.

Looking good. In the last pic looks like there some stuff growing in the grate. Looks like the same stuff I have. Any idea what it is?

some sort of hair algae i think. it collects bubbles during the day when the lights come on.
whatever it is the torchus snails and tangs don't touch it.
my phosphates in that tank are .02ppm and my nitrates are somewhere around 0.
i'm hoping it goes away on its own accord - i've turned the whites way down on the lights so maybe that will help.

I do have some sponges popping up. Its amazing to watch the tank go through its stages.

I don't know about amazing but I was really starting to not like whatever that crap was growing (I assume hair algae) and did a bunch of research on what would eat it.
Anyhow - I settled on getting a pair of turbo snails from Petco (oh be quiet, lol) and they are off to a good start. Woohoo!

So about a week after I bought the turbos - the hair algae started dying off on its own. Now to figure out how to keep these turbos alive...
Here are some coral photos

I moved the maxima from my DT to this frag tank.
I don’t think it looks very good - it still reacts to shadows but isn’t extending its mantle

My tangs are getting too tall to go under the frag rack. I'm going to have to either lower the rack or raise it however I'm not too keen on either.
I'm leaning towards opening up the middle of the tank and put the acros on a pvc-scape type deal. I saw an interesting video from TSA - basically using PVC instead of tonga branches. I think it'll look like hell but then again - its a frag tank so....who really cares if everything is growing well, right?

The Kole is probably going to get too big for that tank. It'll grow to about 7-9" and get about 4-6" from belly to dorsal. I think @ptreef saw this coming when he asked for it when you need to rehome it back in May.
Yellow's... meh, never cleaned much in my frag tank. Just pecked a little here and there but mostly just waited for mysis and nori. Traded his ass in for a Tomini. For me every fish in a frag tank has a job, if it won't work it gets the boot.

Tomini's are bristletooth tangs, like the Kole, that don't grow as big. I find them to be excellent frag tank tangs. Being smaller also allows them to move around through the frags easier and they will clean the plugs too.
