A head's up, I called my local vet and just straight-up told her why I needed Interceptor (red bugs on my SPS corals) and she had no problem with selling me one Interceptor tablet (good for almost 400g of water).

So, if you need the medication for your tank, it's pretty easy to get if you're honest.

Most Vets won't have an issue with it if you explain why you need it.

The issue for Vets lies in legal/liability issues in selling a medication for something other than what it was intended for. If someone obtained Interceptor from a Vet who knew what it was being used for, then they lost $10,000 in corals, they could probably sue the Vet for selling it to them.

This is outside the fact that it is illegal to knowingly sell or prescribe a controlled substance for a purpose other than that it was intended for.

If I were you, I'd keep your Vet's name under your hat for their sake. They probably only did it because they know you.

This thread touches on a topic that has been debated in great length in the past. No posts regarding any illegal means to obtain or possess it will be allowed.

I did not illegally obtain it, a vet prescribed it for me.

Go ahead and delete this thread. I was trying to post helpful knowledge but you guys just want to turn it into "oh no he's discussing means & methods for illegal controlled substance abuse and DISTRIBUTION!"

Come on people, we don't live in black & white, we live in grey. This oviously is an "ok" scenario. If you disagree, find a vet, sue them, lose the case, and your legal fees in the process. Then come here and voice your legal opinion. Until then, please stop using scare tactics.

It's not like the vet gave me heroin under the table to take the edge off my knee pain. Give me a break people.

You can sue anybody for anything. That doesn't make anything right or wrong.

Dustin,
There are no scare tactics involved here. Interceptor is not manufactured for the treatment of Redbugs. It is a controlled substance meant for the treatment heartworm disease, the control of adult hookworm infection, and to remove/control adult roundworms and whipworms in dogs and puppies, and to prevent heartworm disease and remove adult hookworms and roundworms in cats and kittens. To prescribe it for any purpose other than that is illegal. The fact that it does kill Redbugs does not make it OK to prescribe it, sell it, or distribute it for that purpose, only for the purpose it is manufactured for.

Take my post as informational, not an attempt to scare you.

I know what Interceptor is.

Since I also like to engage in Google battles, I will post my findings. The FDA approved milbemycin oxime (Interceptor) "for use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian."

Same listing for pennicilin. Logically, that makes perfect sense to me. Do you guys think all possible uses for pennicillin are listed on some great table of uses somewhere? And that any intended purpose not on that list is illegal?

We non-doctors need to pretend that are-doctors know what they're doing. Same goes for non-lawyers vs. are-lawyers.

Dustin, penicillin is not a prescription medication. Interceptor is. Prescription medications are to be prescribed for "on label purposes" only. Any vet who prescribes it "off label" is risking their license. Interceptor's "on label purposes" are for dogs and cats only. That is the fact of the matter.

There is no need for anyone to get their hackles up over this. This specific topic is discussed very clearly in the forum rules. As long as everyone pays attention, and plays nice, the mods wont need to close the thread.

Here is a link for the Federal Regulations defining the use of mibemycin oxime which describes the use for dogs and cats only:

"(14) Used, prescribed, or sold any veterinary prescription drug or prescribed an extralabel use of any drug in the absence of a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship;"

Back to the reason the thread was started.....thanks Dustin for sharing info with potential ARC folks that could help them in the future if they choose to use it.

Where did you pick up the red bugs? Added new coral recently (I hope :) )?

I really have no idea where they came from. I haven't even had any problems with my corals, in fact they seem to be doing better and better. I just happened to be staring really close at one of the frags on my frag rack one night and noticed the bugs. Then I started researching...

It doesn't say the drug is to be used for cats and dogs only. It says federal law restricts this drug to use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian (as I said in an earlier post).

There is a valid relationship. I didn't just walk in and receive anything I asked for.

I think people who like to make up their own "facts" (penicillin is available over the counter? really?) as they go along should just sit back and read, not type.

Any other insight? You can go to a local Tractor Supply and buy it too. I happen to buy and utilize drugs for veterinary purposes as a career, so you are barking up the wrong tree. Read the package of the interceptor you got from your vet, and see where it says the FDA approved it for use on fish tanks. You cant because it wont. And veterinarians cannot prescribe it off-label without risking their license.

WOW! I question why a dewormer would be prescription while antibiotics would be OTC.

Improper use of antibiotics can be catostrophic.

Agreed. Improper use of a dewormer can be just as catastrophic. Improper use of any pharmaceutical could be. But that is up to the FDA, not us.
