Whats the best skimmer

Yes the elusive Red Dragon Pump. The SuperMarine looks to be a good value. I would have went with that skimmer if i thought it could handle my system and I had an extre $659 burning a hole in my pocket. 45 Watts for such a big tank would awesome.

I saw a BK mini 250 somewhere I cant remember where. But if we went with the bubbleking itd have to be that 250 internal, that looks pretty sweet. Does that skimmer come with the pump?

Yes they all include the pumps. If you buy one please let me know. Ill bring the beer! I have wanted to see one of these in person.

Bubble king does not have a mini 250 you may have been thinking about the ATI BM250....

Will do, right now its at the top of the list.... I think its the Bubble king Supermarine, Deltec AP851, or Reeflo Orca. Its another $500 for the BK though. That could really postpone the Solaris.

Skimmers worth considering in the uppper ranges:

Bubble King Mini (which is a bit tight on this size tank) or the Deluxe - [IMG]http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=bubbleking">http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=bubbleking</a>

oh and had I the choice... that Reeflo would top my list if noise wasn't an issue. If money isn't, BK all the way. If I am on a budget to some extent and need it quiet, BM250 is probably the one I would look at.

THAT's why my skimmer's not foaming--I forgot to put beer in it!:D

I'm about to purchase a DAS EX-3 for my new project.

Do the name brand bubbles look any different? :)

If you can afford it go with BK 250 (delux/supermarines) the best skimmers in the market.

*cough*MRC*cough*

If you have the time to come to Lawrenceville, I'll be more than happy to walk you through a few of our models in action.

On a budget, Id look at the new Extreme skimmers. Chinese BK/ATI knock off with 2 sicci pumps 54 Watts tottal, not yet released but very promising. and the price cant be beat.

I have been reading the boards about a handful of Chinese knock off skimmers that are apparently producing stunning results. They have some incredible engineers and they already produce so much of our aquarium products. It is only a matter of time before their own improved designs surpass many of our favorite brands.

You really can't go wrong with a number of the skimmers mentioned here. The choice really boils down to what you are looking for in a skimmer and how the skimmers would fit into your system. I have a couple of the skimmers you are looking at (Deltec 851, DAS EX-2) in operation and you're welcome to stop by and see them in action (also have an ER RC-250 that you can check out although it is currently not in operation). If you decide to go with the Bubble King, I'd like to stop by to check it out. Like James, I'd really like to see one in operation!

The needle wheel style skimmers is the way to go. Beckett type is out! They're too inefficient and loud. I have one that I can't wait to retire.

If you're looking at the reeflo orca, definately look at the Mako. It's built with thicker acrylic of standard sizing (the orca is metric), has the auto washdown feature and improved collection cup (downfalls of the orca), and is fully customizable.

What are you planning on stocking?

I would like to know how these skimmers compare to MRC skimmers. I have a MRC-4R (rated for 1100 gal.) and it seems to work well, the only other skimmer I had as a CSS and it was a pain.

Skriz, what about the Orca collection cup is bad?

The biggest downfall with Orca skimmers (at least the one Ive look at closely) is the flow path. They did not design that very good they can have better than 20% of the throughput (water going into it) leaving the skimmer without even seeing a going into the reaction chamber or seeing one bubble. I like to know if the Mako skimmer addressed this.

I think the wet neck feature that Orca offers may be a better choice than a wash down feature. Not sure, i like to no more about the washdown feature.

I would have to agree the effeciency and the bubble prodcution both in quantity and size make a NW the skimmer to beat these days. I have often wondered why MRC which makes really nice bodies hasn't gone this route at least on a single line of skimmers.

Didn't know the Orca was metric. Not that it is a huge deal since a lot of these skimmers are going to be metric, but I would certainly consider a skimmer that you can buy PVC and such for from ACE a plus. I believe the fixed a number of issues with the early Orcas. Here is a recent review:
